Delivery & Installation new flowmakers & construction in an existing Aeration Tank

In 2015, operators at a wastewater treatment plant in the town of Olburgen in the Netherlands were seeking replacement flowmakers for their facility built in 1977. The plant, owned by the Waterboard Rijn & Ijssel, has a processing volume of 150,000 PE (population equivalent) and 5100 m3/h capacity RWA. The purification system includes one aeration tank.

Grundfos previously provided new vertical mixers for Rijn & Ijssel’s wastewater treatment plant in the town of Winterswijk in 2012. This partnership was a success; however, due to a poor experience with the previous flowmakers, Rijn & Ijssel needed more convincing about the quality of Grundfos submersible flowmakers before selecting them for an upgrade at its Olburgen plant.

Thanks to professional support from Group Specialists, Grundfos Netherlands was able to create a CFD computer simulation to show Rijn & Ijssel how the products would work. This demonstration showed a reduction in total installed capacity, which could lead to greater energy savings. The detailed projections helped to convince Rijn & Ijssel and they decided to equip the Olburgen Waste Water Treatment Plant with new Grundfos propellers with an extended warranty from Grundfos Netherlands.

Olburgen Wastewater Treatment Plant installed the new flowmakers in spring 2016. Since then, Grundfos have taken flow velocity measurements using a special 3D Doppler instrument to evaluate the mixer capacity and performance in circulation tanks. The main purpose of circulation tanks is to avoid sedimentation at the bottom and to allow sufficient mixing. A minimum flow velocity must be maintained to achieve this.

As illustrated in the table on this page, results show that the system is working well. The average flow velocity of the wastewater in the outer, middle and inner ring tracks is sufficient to avoid sedimentation and the effective thrust needed to reach 0.3m/s flow velocity has exceeded initial projections in most areas.

By providing the customer with solid projections about system performance, as well as accurate and detailed measurements after installation, Group Specialists and Grundfos Netherlands have assured Rijn & Ijssel of the quality of the products and the system performance.
