Grundfos S-tube® impeller cleans up

Overview

To everybody’s satisfaction, an important  challenge at a Belgian abattoir has been overcome, thanks to the SL wastewater pump fitted with the innovative
S-tube® impeller. Since the new pump was installed, everything has been functioning perfectly without any clogging incidents.

The EEG Slachthuis Van Hoornweder Marcel & Zoon was established in 1986 and is located in Torhout, Belgium. Each week they kill about 11,000 pigs. The wastewater originating from the slaughter lines is collected in a pit before it is transported to the wastewater treatment plant.

“We used to have a lot of malfunctions at this pumping station,” says Mark Van Hoornweder, who is responsible for the technical installation.

“Every time the pump broke down, it meant extra work and costs to repair or replace the pumps. Grundfos introduced us to the SL wastewater pump with an S-tube® impeller, and since then we haven’t had a single failure. We no longer suffer from interruptions or failures of the pump. The new pump has been in place now for over two years.”

Challenges for the pump
Grundfos Belgium selected this project specifically, because pumps used in abattoirs are severely tested. They are exposed to temperature changes, irregular wastewater loads, abrasive particles in the water, and much more. As a result, this causes regular failures and a short life expectancy for the pump, down to just one year. Burnt-out motors and worn impellers were a regular issue.

The requirement for a wastewater pump today is for larger free passage without clogging incidents. At the same time, efficiency is expected to be high. This is
because the composition of wastewater changes constantly and will continue to do so. In addition, water consumption also varies. The result has been increasing
problems with blocked or congested pumps.

The S-tube® impeller combines large free passage and high efficiency, eliminating clogging as a problem in even the toughest of applications, for example in
the wastewater stream from an abattoir.

The high efficiency of the SL wastewater pump with S-tube® impeller has also meant that Grundfos could lower the value of the thermal protection, since the pump consumes 10 % less energy than the original pump for the same application with the same performance at the abattoir.
