Grundfos SQFlex Solar ensuring irrigation of property in the Alentejo

Overview

Four years ago, Artur Pissarro and Fátima Mourão decided to change their lives. They left the city for the peace and quiet of the countryside. With financial aid from the IFAP (Instituto de Financiamento da Agricultura e Pescas - Agriculture and Fisheries Financing Institute), they began a greenhouse agriculture project in Fortes Novas, 15 km from Ferreira do Alentejo.

The Situation

On a 3-hectare property, they have 1500 metres of greenhouses, where they grow cucumber and melons, and 700 fruit trees and an olive grove. These crops require daily watering. When the needs analysis was carried out, it was recommended that we install a CH pump, Artur Pissarro said. However, this brought very high electricity costs: at the maximum, consumption reached 1300 Watts. "With the pump on, the entire system used up the batteries in 15 minutes", the proprietor recalls.

The Grundfos Solution

The use of renewable energy thus arose as the most economical solution. Of the various options available, the couple chose the Grundfos SQFlex Solar system, with a battery back-up system. This allows the SQFlex Solar to act like any other traditional closed water supply system with an electric feed, providing pressure day and night.

The Outcome

According to Artur Pissarro, the Grundfos solution is the best because "it recognises direct and alternating current". The direct current, captured by the solar panels, is converted into alternating current, at 220/250 Watts, supplying all other appliances on the property, such as small kitchen appliances and a computer. "At dawn, the pump is switched on and works until the end of the day. The higher the solar peak, the greater the water pressure", explains Artur Pissarro. After about two years of working every day, from morning to night, the owner is satisfied with the solution and is considering complementing the system with a wind-powered turbine. "Electricity costs are zero", adds Fátima Mourão. In terms of savings, she believes that they have been able to save around EUR 90 per month just in watering the greenhouses, which needs to be continuous.
