EL OBOUR CITY, EGYPT: The community of El Obour City is one of the 16 “New Towns” designed to alleviate housing shortages in the main cities of Cairo and Alexandria. Located approximately 35 km away from Cairo, El Obour City is intended to house a total of 250,000 inhabitants. Large-scale Grundfos pumps originally designed for wastewater applications were chosen to provide the community with water for domestic use.
The Helwan Water and Wastewater Authority in El Obour City outside of Cairo wanted a water boosting system to lift potable water for domestic use to a higher storage tank. One of the specifications set for this new project stipulated that the pumps must be submersible to take flooding into account. IP 68 enclosure was also required. The customer turned to Grundfos for a solution because of the company’s reputation for good service and excellent products.
The Grundfos solution
The four 220 kW wastewater pumps from Grundfos were installed horizontally in a pump pit. All are equipped with a cooling jacket system. While the initial brief suggested that horizontal split case pumps might be suitable, it turned out that the Grundfos pumps were a better and very competitively priced alternative.
Installation was very easy. There was no need to align couplings or pipe work - the pumps were simply bolted in place and were immediately ready for operation.
The pumps are remarkably tough and sturdy, so the need for maintenance is kept to a minimum. Originally designed to pump raw sewerage, they are sure to last for a very long time in this environment where the wear and tear is reduced to a minimum. Not only that: when maintenance is required, the work can be completed in as little time as possible. The SmartTrim feature is one reason for this minimal downtime: patented by Grundfos, the innovative SmartTrim technology allows for easy adjustment of the impeller clearance without any dismantling work. Maintaining maximum pump efficiency has never been easier.
The Helwan Water and Wastewater Authority has expressed complete satisfaction with the Grundfos pumps, which have met all requirements from day one. The pumps have operated without any problems; they have not even needed any maintenance work so far. This has prompted the end-user to certify the Grundfos equipment, a fact which once again demonstrates the credibility and reliability of Grundfos pumps.
