Overview

Grundfos has supplied equipment for the wastewater treatment plant serving the city of Stamboliyski, Bulgaria, including pumps, controls, mixers, aeration system and dosing systems. The four SE1 pumps with the innovative S-tube® impeller installed at the inlet pumping station ensure high efficiency at the wastewater  treatment plant and helps meet the high environmental requirements for the treated wastewater.

The Stamboliyski municipality is located in southern Bulgaria, close to the Marica River, one of the biggest rivers in Bulgaria. Water from the river is used for agricultural irrigation, and the river provides a habitat for many species of fish, birds and plants.

The situation
EU and national regulations set strict guidelines for wastewater treatment and for the standard of the water released from wastewater treatment plants into rivers.
The Stamboliyski municipality has a budget from EU funds for the reconstruction of the wastewater network and construction of the wastewater treatment plant. Grundfos was deeply involved already at the tender stage, working with the contractors provide a complete and optimised technical solution for the wastewater  treatment plant. Grundfos Bulgaria offered high efficiency and non-clogging equipment and succeeded in winning the order.

The Grundfos solution
The inlet pumping station collects wastewater from whole municipality and transfers it for treatment. Based on the load profile of the sewage system, the consultant designed the station to work also like a retention tank, to collect the flow from higher rainfall. This means that the pumping station will prevent sewage outflow in the river.

Four 10 kW SE1 wastewater pumps with the S-tube® impeller are installed at the inlet pumping station and are combined with an AeroJet, a self aspirating mixer-aerator powered by a 4 kW SE1 wastewater pump. Both the pumps and the AeroJet are controlled by a Grundfos Dedicated Controls control box. The Grundfos solution for the inlet pumping station guarantees reliable and efficient operation, with lower energy consumption .

The outcome
In the preliminary design stage the pumps chosen were 15 kW. Grundfos convinced the customer that four 10 kW pumps were suited for the application. The 10 kW pumps have exceeded the municipal authority’s expectations for reduced energy consumption. Furthermore, the high environmental requirements for the treated wastewater have been met, protecting the Marica river from the risk of sewage outflow, also during heavy rainfall.
