Overview

In December 2012 Grundfos Ukraine bid for the Urban Infrastructure Project in Boryspil, Ukraine, for the renovation of three wastewater pumping stations. The bid was based on six SE wastewater pumps with the S-tube® impeller, two in each of the three pumping stations, and thanks to the high efficiency offered by the pumps, Grundfos Ukraine won the bid .

The main International Airport in Ukraine is located in Boryspil, making this north-central Ukrainian town the main point of entry to the country. That makes Boryspil very important, and other municipalities in Ukraine looking to upgrade their wastewater infrastructure will certainly have taken note of the manner in which issues were resolved during the refurbishment, to the satisfaction of the customer.

The situation
In December 2012 Grundfos Ukraine bid for the Urban Infrastructure Project in Boryspil, Ukraine, for the renovation of three wastewater pumping stations. The reason of renovation was that the existing pumps had been installed for 30 years and were using too much electricity. Too much time was being spent by staff on service and maintenance was frequent and a large number of spare parts were required. The project was specified for a competing pump manufacturer, so Grundfos Ukraine knew what they were up against .

The Grundfos solution
Grundfos Ukraine supplied six SE wastewater pumps with the innovative S-tube® impeller, with two SE pumps in each of the three wastewater pumping stations. The Grundfos solution was chosen because of the higher efficiency of the Grundfos pumps compared to the competitor offering. The Grundfos Ukraine supplier was subcontracted to the main contractor, who was TREK-S. In addition, control boxes with competitor equipment (soft starters and controllers) were a part of the delivery.

The outcome
The six SE wastewater pumps were installed in mid-2013, however shortly after start-up all pumps were damaged due to a production defect. Within two months, all pumps were repaired and are still working properly. Other than the production defect, there have been no instances of clogging and energy consumption has been reduced by 30 %.

Resolving issues such as this after installation shows a good cooperation between Grundfos sales and service departments and the ability to resolve issues at the customer in a short period of time. Since the defect became apparent, control has been carried out on 46 other pumps from this problem group, and some of these have also been repaired in the same way.
