Following a test period of two months, a high-efficiency SE wastewater pump with S-tube impeller cut energy use by 30% and reduced downtime from jamming incidents from a weekly basis with the old pump to no jamming incidents whatsoever. The Grundfos S-tube impeller cuts energy use and downtime

Installed in the pump pit next to a S1 wastewater pump with conventional impeller, a SE1 wastewater pump with S-tube impeller showed the advantages of this innovative impeller design, impressing the customer with convincing arguments to invest following the ‘try and buy’ initiative from Grundfos.

 

The SE1 pump with S-tube was a test installation that ran for two months at Bjørkelunden Pumping Station, Aurskog, Høland Municipality, Norway. Both pumps – the test pump SE1 in pit 1 and the original pump S1 in pit 2 – use a variable frequency drive, have the same times for ramp-up (10 seconds) and ramp-down (20 seconds), and deliver a flow of 65 l/s. Prior to installing the test pump, problems with rags jamming the impeller meant the original S1 pumps were raised by operations personnel for cleaning once a week.

 

No jamming, less energy

Since installing the SE1 pump with S-tube impeller, the customer has not experienced any jamming of the impeller whatsoever. The original S1 pump in pit 2 has continued to jam with rags in the
impeller. The SE1 pump with S-tube also uses less power for the same output – energy savings of no less than 30% over the test period. There is also a big difference in noise and vibration levels when the pumps are running; the SE1 with S-tube is almost silent with no vibration when running.
