Service Contract boosts reliability and cuts costs for Slovakian water utility company

Overview

Unless your business is pumps, chances are that you are not very interested in how the pumps at your facility work –- as long as they do. On the other hand, if pumps are inadequate or poorly maintained, they can cost you a lot of money and resources, and it makes good business sense to look for ways to optimise your installed base and maintenance. A few years ago, Slovakian water utility company Trenčianska Vodohospodárska Spoločnosť a.s. (TVS) did just this to address a recurring pump reliability issue, and a Grundfos Service Contract has since proved to be the right solution.

The situation

In 2008, TVS experienced frequent pump clogging at a wastewater pumping station. The built-in grinders in the non-Grundfos pumps installed at the time were causing problems that were temporarily solved through regular weekly cleaning. This solution, however, was financially demanding (not to mention annoying for the TVS staff), and TVS approached Grundfos for a permanent solution to the clogging issue.

Grundfos had already been in contact with TVS; the company already had a service contract for its SCADA solution, and following a presentation of Grundfos products and solutions in May 2008, Grundfos and Production Technical Director Róbert Rezníček of TVS had discussed the potential benefits of regular pump service as well.

The Grundfos solution

Grundfos and TVS agreed to replace the faulty pumps with new Grundfos SLV pumps with improved capacity, and to carry out annual preventive checks to ensure trouble-free operation. Grundfos compiled a list of potable water and wastewater pumps in operation and drafted a Service Contract that was tailored to the needs of TVS.

Calculations showed that significant savings could be achieved by signing the Grundfos Service Contract instead of continuing to clean the faulty pumps and pumping stations. Even though the calculations were based on a best case scenario, actual, real-life operational savings achieved were still quite large, and the Service Contract was therefore signed for one calendar year in 2011.

The outcome

The Service Contract proved to be just what TVS needed. The annual preventive checks and subsequent service recommendations from Grundfos' authorised service partner made possible significant cost savings. In addition to the service work, Grundfos provided continuous advice and guidance for TVS and assisted during the replacement of obsolete pumps. The list of serviced pumps now also includes Grundfos CR, SP, AP and SE units.

By eliminating unpredictable faults and lowering operation costs, the Service Contract was so beneficial to TVS' operations budget that it was renewed in 2012, 2013 and 2014. Describing the benefits for TVS, Róbert Rezníček says: "Today, I and my team have considerably bigger comfort from the point of view of fewer faults in the system. We had a good experience with our supplier and have good consulting at hand, and over the years of cooperation, we have built a trust that the solutions they offer help us reach our goals".
