Overview

Limiting the potential damage of coastal and inland flooding requires a pump solution that is dependable. In terms of a reliable flood control, there’s a lot at stake – initially, the protection of people, their homes, production facilities, crops, and livestock. And in the longer term, proper flood control solutions can prevent contamination of drinking water supply systems, damage to infrastructure and the potential risk of famine.

Solutions you can rely on
Through a combination of technical know-how, industry leadership and solution-oriented product development Grundfos has the pumps and control solutions to cope with these heavy demands.

Our expertise has been built up, through a policy of working with locally-based consulting/design engineers that possess the knowledge, have the history, and know the rules of the game in their markets. And over the years, our experts have designed reliable flood control solutions in each individual case to the benefit of societies all over the world.

Pumps that do the job
Flood control pumping is characterised by a requirement for pump solutions with high flow and low head. The powerful Grundfos range of axial and mixed-flow pumps for flood control are specifically designed for durable use in pumping stations, harbour management and storm water tank solutions.

Storm water tanks
Storm water tanks are an effective way of reducing peak flow and equalising flow rates from storm water runoffs in the sewer system. Our pump and control solutions ensure reliable and automatic operation of storm water tanks, regardless of the size. And once the hydraulic load is reduced and capacity is available, you can get wastewater moving again with perfect efficiency.

Advanced simulations
Ensuring that flood events can be controlled often requires careful planning. Using advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations at the design phase, we can tailor pump solutions that can cope with the heavy demands of moving vast flows of surface or storm water – and guarantee that it works.

Global experience
With successful flood control projects in some of the world’s most vulnerable cities in Korea, Dubai, Indonesia, Malaysia, China, India, Belgium, Denmark, USA, and many more, we know what the problem is and how it can be solved – and are equally competent at serving customers in both 50 Hz and 60 Hz markets globally.

Expertise in every phase
Grundfos can supply the specialist expertise to help meet your performance objectives, from the initial identification of needs, design, recommendations on duty set up and strategy, installation, operation, and maintenance of the pumping solution. And Grundfos commissioning agreements ensure correct installation and service agreements cover all eventualities, from routine maintenance to spare parts, for optimal operation.

KJI Grundfos – references to flood control projects from around the world

KJI, a Grundfos Group company, has an unparalleled history supplying flood control pumps and solutions around the world. We have selected a few reference projects to show the scale and the success of these solutions.

KJI Grundfos has successfully installed pumping stations in many locations around the world, ranging from new installations in difficult environments to replacement and refurbishment projects. These projects have in common the optimisation of energy use and operation, cost savings, and the requirement that they must meet the storm water challenges of the future.

Coping with increased stormwater flows

In the first quarter of 2010, YCC Grundfos received an order from the City of Newport, Rhode Island, USA for a stormwater pumping station with different capacities for varying head and flow requirements for stormwater overflow and ocean outfall protection.

Grundfos supplied:

Pre-sales consultancy

Pumping station design

Supply of complete pumping station package

Supervision of installation

Commissioning

Grundfos pumping station solution:
Grundfos supplied KJI dewatering pumps capable of meeting the requirements stated above. The pumps are fully operational.

Grundfos Dedicated Control IO111

Nogok Li pumping station protects Yunchun County, South Korea, from potentially disastrous flooding

The potential for flood disaster in the Im-Jin Rive is high, because the river basin is deep and flows rapidly. Floods in the late 1990’s killed 128 people and affected over 31,000, with damage for USD 1 billion.

Grundfos KJI supplied:

Pre-sales consultancy

Support pumping station design

Supply of complete pump and column tube

Supervision of installation

Commissioning and maintenance training

The pumping station solution:
Following completion of the network pumping station, localised torrential downpours can be discharged into the Im-Jin River, protecting Yunchun County.

Pump model: 1800KWM850 18T66 - 4units

Motor: 850kW * 18P * 6600 * 60Hz

Duty point: Q 390m3/min at H 9.8m

Application: Storm water

The pumps have a double sealing system on the motor bracket. If water enters the motor bracket by the cable entrance, the water can’t go into motor because of our sealing system, meaning it can run in emergency situations without any impact.

An anti-cavitation cone is installed and reduces vibrations, noise and prevents cavitation.
