Coil passes

Passes is the term that describes the number of times a pipe circuit has passed the face in an air cooler, dry cooler or condenser.

Passes is the term that describes the number of times a pipe circuit has passed the face in an air cooler, dry cooler or condenser. Face is the term that describes the area where air can enter the unit. The unit is most often rectangular, with pipes that pass along the length. The face area (length x width) depends on the design/use of the unit and must be sufficient for the actual airflow.

It is important when sizing pipes in air coolers, evaporators and condensers, that the speed of flow in pipes matches the permissible pressure loss and fluid speed. This is done by adjusting the number of passes in the pipe circuit.
