The Situation
WORMERLAND, THE NETHERLANDS: At the beginning of the millennium, the Netherlands introduced laws to ensure that all households and companies which still discharged untreated wastewater into surface water or into the ground had to be connected to the main sewer network by 1 January 2005.
Sometimes, however, that task has proved unusually complex. As a result, work continues to ensure that everyone meets the legal requirements as soon as possible. The engineering firm Oranjewoud has helped many different clients achieve this goal, such as the municipality of Wormerland.
Located in the province of North Holland in the Netherlands, Wormerland is home to approximately 16,000 people. To ensure that the population benefits from modern wastewater management technology, the local authorities approached Oranjewoud for a new pumping station infrastructure. Oranjewoud then turned to Grundfos to get everything from a single supplier.
The Grundfos Solution
The local authorities wanted the full package: Complete pumping stations equipped with sensors and controls and suitable for pumping wastewater through a pressurised pipe system. That was not all, however: The pumping stations should also be connected to an internet and extranet-based control centre and serviced afterwards. All of these tasks would be solved by Grundfos.
When approached by the taskforce from Oranjewoud, the wastewater team at Grundfos Netherlands set to work. To make sure everything would perform as intended, they began by drawing up a preliminary design for the pressurised pipe system. This work would subsequently form the basis for the final design, created in co-operation with the contractor.
The team did not stop there, however. The system for remote monitoring and control was also completely designed by Grundfos Netherlands. It is based on intelligent control units and sensors specifically developed by Grundfos to suit pump technology demands, and the total of 254 control units all report to a monitoring and control centre also engineered by Grundfos. The services available include text messages and e-mails that give early warning of potential problems, allowing sufficient time to prevent downtime.
CAD drawings, commissioning, and more Naturally, the partnership with Oranjewoud also involved engineering of the pumping stations, pumps, and controls to optimise performance – and attention to detail such as supplying all the necessary CAD drawings to ensure accuracy in real life. Speaking of real life, Grundfos also handled commissioning of the pumping stations, taking them across that final stage from the drawing board to actual performance.
The Outcome
With the finished solution in place, the local authorities still wanted maximum convenience and minimal load on their resources. As a result, Grundfos and one of its partners within the Dutch Service Professionals scheme, Pompen Service Holland, entered into a two-year contract stipulating that all service and maintenance work will be carried out at a fixed price. No surprises, no downtime. The people of Wormerland can be sure that every effort will be made to provide a satisfactory service: The two-year agreement includes an option for a subsequent ten-year contract; an excellent motivational factor!

| Says Mike W. Otten from Grundfos Netherlands; “This is an excellent example of where the world of wastewater infrastructure is headed. We are moving away from piece-by-piece solutions to complete packages, and Grundfos is very fortunate to have seen the trend coming: We are ready with pumping station bundles made up of high-quality components that we know exactly how to combine for best results.” |
