  Cool Dubai

09/11/2006

Dubai is the second largest of the United Arab Emirates and is becoming increasingly popular as both a vacation destination (more than 6.1 million tourists visited in 2005) and as one of the latest “hot spots” for purchasing real estate.

As tourism now plays such a major role in the economy, this has had the spin-off effect of an increased demand for leisure facilities including the new 6.5 million square foot (0.6 million square meters) retail and leisure resort – Mall of the Emirates. Along with 400 retail outlets, the resort boasts a host of leisure activities including, perhaps most surprisingly, Ski Dubai – the first indoor ski complex in the Middle East.

Maintaining the snow dome and its 242,200 square feet (22,500 square meters), complete with chair lifts, requires 6000 tons (6096 metric tons) of snow. In this part of the world, temperatures regularly hit 115 degrees F (46 degrees C) and above. Therefore, the role of maintaining the chilled-water temperature is a job for an expert – the Grundfos single stage end suction centrifugal pump families. These pumps have proven themselves to be more than capable of providing the capacity audience of 1500 with a ski adventure they would have to travel many thousands of miles to experience otherwise.

The customized solution provided by Grundfos included pumps specifically built to the precise requirements, complete with seals capable of operating at temperatures consistently at -13 degrees F (–25 degrees C).

The Kempenski Hotel (Europe’s oldest luxury hotel group) is the on-site, 5-star attraction and also follows a similar theme with its Swiss Chalet styling. It also maintains its cool with a range of Grundfos end suction pumps that supply all the chilled-water, air-conditioning and submersible effluent pumps for the drainage requirements.

In a country that holds an annual month-long Shopping Festival that attracted an incredible 3.3 million people to Dubai in 2005 – the ongoing success for this award-winning Mall seems guaranteed.
