Grundfos CR from 1981 still in grape shape

Stretching from Strathalbyn to Lake Alexandria in South Australia, the Langhorne Creek region has a cool climate and rich, fertile soils making it the perfect place to grow grapes for wine. Only 15 kilometres from Strathalbyn is the town of Angas Plains, which is home to a large winery with over 60 acres of vineyards.

In the early 1980s, the winery was experiencing great growth and considering the volume of wine they started to produce, needed a dependable and cost efficient cooling system for their harvests to reduce wastage and spoilage.

It was decided by the winery, in consultation with their local pump dealer, to install a looped cooling system featuring a set of Grundfos CR vertical multistage pumps. This ensured the storage vats for their wine were kept a consistent temperature, greatly improving their ability to ferment and store more of their high quality product.

Since their installation in 1981, these pumps have been the work horse of the cooling system, often running 24 hours a day, 7 days a week during warmer periods. The system is still in operation today (2020) - that’s an incredible 39 years of service.

This system was spotted in a recent site visit by Daish Irrigation, an Authorised Grundfos Dealer, who regularly optimise and service the winery’s irrigation systems.

Cory Johnson from Daish Irrigation says, “Considering it’s been in operation since 1981, most times running 24/7 – that’s an amazing lifespan. Wouldn’t think anything else for a Grundfos pump.”
