Distributed Pumping advantages over pressure independent control valves

In traditional primary or primary/secondary HVAC systems, pumps are sized for peak load or the highest pressure drop in the system. Air handling units, or other terminal units, closest to the pumps receive too much pressure, which is why pressure independent control valves (PIC-V’s) and balancing valves are used. They reduce excess pressure and flow to these terminal units and help prevent too much flow from going somewhere it wasn’t intended. But, using this approach wastes large amounts of pumping energy.
