GRUNDFOS Direct Sensors™ has been involved in the Temperature Control market, and has been particular involved in assisting our partners transform the Plastic Injection Molding market and enable innovations within the Temperature Control Units. This newsletter focuses on our latest sensor developments and the innovation ongoing within the following SubApps:

Applications | Plastic injection molding, Hot Runners, Die Casting, Rubber Molding & Extrusion
Moving the sensors in proximity of the plastic injection molding, hot runners, die casting, rubber moulding and extrusion enables zone monitoring and actual zone-control in combination with valves. Solutions with inserts enable integration of a wide range of no-moving-part flow sensors in compact designed hydraulic manifolds. The flowsensors are combined with temperature, which eliminates the need for additional temperature pockets/wells to secure optimal cooling and control of the different molding conditions. A pressure sensor is used to monitor leakages, dirt build up etc. together with the second temperature measurement. Heat calculation between the temperature of pressure sensor/-s RPS and flow sensor/-s VFS is complimentary - and can be used for logging, reporting and potential longer lifetime. Now with a special VFS for operation up to 160°C. Certifiable heat metering expected before the end of 2019.
Application | TC Unit with manifold
A series of flow sensors on the TC units secures an even distribution of tempered water (at controlled temperature and flow) to a series of channels in i.e. a machine for PiM, HotRunner or Die Casting. Now with a special 160°C operating VFS.
Application | TC Unit < 160°C
Pump speed control with no-moving part flow/temperature VFSensor upto 160°C to secure adequate cooling & heating delivered by TCU and sometimes chiller. A pressure sensor, RPS on the return line for the TCU maintains adequate system pressure. By the use of only two sensors, heat calculation is enabled by dT*Q. Above 160°C by use of differential pressure, DPS with capillary tubes.
Application | TC Unit > 160°C
Pump speed control and indirect flow control via capillary tubes to DPSensor for above 160°C operation to secure optimal cooling etc. A pressure sensor is put at the end of a copper pipe to secure below 120° C operations is used to maintain adequate system pressure.
GRUNDFOS Direct Sensors™ for various temperatures:
On the product side, our new line of flow and pressure sensors for operation upto 160°C is the new hot stuff from GRUNDFOS. The Direct Sensors™ comes with our established combined 2in1 flow and temperature measurement by the use of one sensor. We are furthermore selling sensors for operation above 160°C by withdrawing the sensors from the direct flow. A differential pressure is via capillaries providing an indirect flow measurement and a pressure sensor in the end of a cupper pipe is providing the pressure. Our sensors upto 160°C are furthermore only available in digital mode to provide the enlarged measurement span, and opens up for new additional data to be reported.
In our new standard range of sensors for OEMs, we have radically improved the accuracy. Between “any” of 2 standard sensors (VFS, RPS, DPS and MFS), we obtain a dT of +/- 0.3 C
- Accuracy 15-90°C (59-194°F): 0.3 K
- Accuracy 0-120°C (32-248°F): 0.5 K
This means, that our customers can place a pressure or flow sensor with integrated temperature where ever in the machines or between the machines, and obtain an unseen differential temperature accuracy between unpaired sensor. In general our VFS range of flow sensors has gotten their inaccuracy reduced by 1/3rd from 1½% FS to 1% extended from 100°C to 120°C.

With the new flow accuracy and dT accuracy, this means that our customers can start working on turning their units into EN1434 heat meter certifiable TC, Chiller Units etc.
The pressure accuracy has also improved.

- Accuracy (± 1 σ), 15-90°C (59-194°F): ± 1% FS
- Accuracy (± 1 σ), 0-120°C (32-248°F): ± 1.5% FS
and all standard sensors comes with a digi-analog interface meaning, that our customers can continue using our standard analog signals and later on develop a digital interface. Going digital will release the full potential of the sensors enabling more features, less power consumption and system costs.
We additionally have a one-wire bus version enabling upto 32 sensors on the same cable, which can be requested for any of our standard sensors. Also a 3in1 sensor measuring flow, pressure and temperature has been released this year together with a complete range of flow sensors for 160 C measurement and operation.. A range of flow sensors developed in partnership with selected customers, and requested specifically by TCU builders, PiM, HotRunner and Die Casting machine manufactrurers.
