Cleaning pig

A cleaning pig is designed to facilitate the removal of sediments in a drain or sewer. It is formed as a cylindrical device with shallow channels on the surface and is propelled through the pipe by the flow.

It is released into the pipeline from a launcher and retrieved again at a receiver. When passed through a wastewater pressure pipe, the cleaning pig flushes out sediment, such as sand, sludge and other debris in the pipeline. Such debris causes friction losses and over time can block the pipe totally. Removing debris also helps to avoid H2S gasses formed in connection with sedimentation in pipes.
When designing a pressure pipe system, it is important to correctly position the launch sites for the cleaning pig, especially when the pipe changes diameter.
