Ozone is a well known sanitation agent used for water treatment. Ozone is derived from the atmospheric air and can be dissolved in water for disinfection purposes

The poisonous gas ozone is produced by passing oxygen through a high intensity electrical field. In this way the oxygen gas is changed to ozone gas.  Ozone is highly reactive and short lived. Under normal conditions it will only survive for minutes in the atmosphere.

Once generated, ozone must be used immediately as it breaks down rapidly to oxygen. Ozone is the strongest oxidation compound in water treatment. Thus it can be used to kill germs and remove other organic compounds in short time.


•         Effective against free bacteria floating in the water

•         Low life cycle cost

•         Smell and taste of the water is not affected

•         Not sensitive to pH-value of the water

•         No chemical except oxygen remains in treated water


•         Biofilm in hot water tank and pipes are not affected

•         No long term effect on bacteria

•         Needs a post filtration system that may include an activate carbon filter.

•         Ozonation by-products may be carcinogenic and may include brominated compounds

•         Ozone is badly soluble in water and therefore special mixing techniques are needed

•         An ozone treatment system may require pre-treatment for hardness reduction or the additional of polyphosphate preventing formation of carbonate scale.
