Water project brought to Bepanda Community by Generosity Global Association

Water is a basic human need; however, many communities still suffer from the reality of a lack of access to water. Bepanda, located in the Littoral region of Cameroon is one such community wherein water access is non-existent and yet the community is the largest municipality in the region and has a population of 32,225 people.

The lack of clean water is an issue that still haunts many communities in many countries. As the COVID-19 remains a pandemic and a threat across the globe, communities without clean water find themselves in a tough situation. Through the help of Generosity Global, the Bepanda community will now have access to clean water. Generosity Global has secured funding from the Grundfos Foundation through its Community Engagement Grant which is awarded to local partners of the Grundfos entity to help in the prevention of the surge of the virus as well as providing aid where needed. Generosity Global Association is a Non-governmental organisation based in Cameroon with the mission of bringing clean water to vulnerable communities. It has successfully brought clean water to nearly 40 000 people within Cameroon over a duration of 3 years.

Bepanda is a poverty-stricken community, with its residents having little to no income at all and with water being sold in distant areas - the community finds themselves having to walk long distances to purchase water, which they otherwise cannot afford. The lack of affordability means that the community is unable to fulfil the precautionary regulations of handwashing which are recommended in order to help prevent the spread of the Coronavirus. The Grundfos Foundation funding thus means that Generosity global will positively impact the community of Bepanda by drilling boreholes in the community to enable the community to have readily access to clean water. By doing so, Generosity Global will be helping prevent the spread of the COVID-19, bettering the health of the residents, reducing death that is caused by diseases related to the absence of clean water and building community leaders who will be trained to ensure the sustainability of the project.

The project will target 10 000 people which is 28% of Bepanda’s entire population. It will aim to provide clean drinking water to the Bepanda community that will enable the washing of hands, cleaning of homes and surfaces which will be a major tool in preventing the spread of the COVID-19 . In addition the project will also help solve the surge of diseases such as typhoid, cholera and other diseases which are caused by a lack of clean water. As part of the project, Generosity Global will also provide soaps and sanitizers to the community to foster personal hygiene, disinfection and prevention.

“With the emergence of COVID-19, it is now more imperative than ever for the need of access to clean water in communities across Cameroon and throughout the developing world” says Generosity Globals’ Africa Region Director – George Tabi Ndip.
