Application Engineer III

Job Purpose

 Responsible for PLC program development, PLC selection, and coordination of integration to control panels for pumping system applications, specifically for the Water Utility market.  This includes documentation of technical details for assigned products, development/programming of standard control offerings and custom projects, programming review of third-party vendors software packages, and documentation. Supporting marketing with technical information for product promotions.  Will work with assigned vendors to establish supply chain, resources and supplied PLC controls and programming.  



Key Accountabilities / Responsibilities

  • Design, develop and release standard PLC programs to meet the need for the water utility market.
  • Investigate applications, programs PLCs and coordinates programming for PLCs internally or through other resources.
  • Work with customers, engineers, and other Grundfos team members to develop and launch a product offering.
  • Define the PLC hardware specifications to support pumping system applications
  • Perform specification review and controls application support for proposals
  • Work with internal and external supply chain resources for control design, manufacturing, and programming.
  • Provide technical documentation for submittals (Sequence, PID, Theory, Engineering/Design Specification, etc.)
  • Provide technical support to create and revise technical and marketing literature.
  • Lead cross functional teams as assigned.  Team member for new product development projects.
  • Create and maintains product basic specifications.
  • Support price management activities, including setting the list prices, creating price pages and obtaining competitor information.
  • Support Service Department in their development of service kit programs, service manuals and product fault resolution. Coordinate product problem resolutions with Service Department, global team and our Partners.
  • Maintain market related intelligence by attending trade shows and interacting with customers.
  • Support training activities, including advanced technical topics relating to products for internal personnel as well as OEM partners and other external partners.
  • Maintain market related intelligence by attending trade shows and interacting with customers.
  • Provide technical support in field when necessary
  • Coordinate and lead product related activities between various Grundfos companies.
  • Acts as liaison for OEM partners within the Grundfos companies



Required Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree (Engineering preferred). Hands on PLC and HMI programming with minimum 7+ years relevant experience           



  1.  Experience with following
    1. Allen Bradley programming (RSLogix500, RSLogix5000, RSView, etc.)
    2. Allen Bradley hardware (CompactLogix, ControlLogix, SLC, etc)
    3. Schneider Programmable Controllers
    4. Beckhoff PLC experience is a plus
    5. Common industrial networks (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, BACnet, etc)
    6. HMI programming (Human Machine Interface…PanelView, etc)
  2. Knowledgeable in Ladder Logic & Relay Logic
  3.  EPLAN CAD software experience a plus
  4. Ability to read and interpret schematics
  5. Must be able to troubleshoot and diagnose PLC's and Electrical Mechanical systems
  6. Strong technical writing and communications skills
  7. MUST be a team player, who can effectively communicate information and respond to questions in person-to-person and small group situations with colleagues, customers, clients, and the general public
  8. Ability to take an idea or sequence of operations from a discussion and convert that in to a PLC/HMI program
  9.  Familiar with UL508A, NEC, and other applicable codes and standards
  10. Must know AC Drives
  11. Skills and experience to learn, troubleshoot, and train others in the application and use of related Grundfos products an and good technical understanding of applications is required. 
  12. Knowledge in PLC design, control panel design, electrical panel design a plus
  13. Good written and oral communication skills. Excellent organization skills
  14. Can apply PC based software and mainframe software
  15. Ability to travel via normal commercial modes both within the US and Internationally as required (20-30%).
  16.  Ability to multi-task, solve technical product related problems and develop technical literature to support sales
