ALPHA HWR installation

Learn how to install the ALPHA HWR pump in a hot water recirculation system. Gain insight into proper mounting, conduit box positioning, and power connector assembly.

In this module, we will cover practical installation guidance for the ALPHA HWR pump in a domestic hot water recirculation system.
We will discuss mounting, conduit box positioning, and power connector assembly. Let’s get started.

The ALPHA HWR comes with either a flange connection or a union connection.

Let’s start by making sure you have the rest of the supplied items for installation:
A power connector
Screws for the conduit lid
Gaskets
Check valve
Conduit box lid

These items are all provided in the box. Got them all? Good, let’s continue.

Step 1: locate the hot water return line
This is where the ALPHA HWR pump needs to be mounted.

Step 2: mount the pump
Identify the arrows on the pump housing…
They indicate the flow direction through the pump.
Next, fit the gaskets on both the suction and discharge side of the pump.
Then mount the check valve in the discharge.
Ensure you install the pump with a horizontal motor shaft within ± 5°.
To secure the ALPHA HWR with a flange connection into place, you must tighten the fittings.
For the ALPHA HWR with a union connection, screw the connector into the pipe and tighten it.

Step 3: conduit box positioning
The standard position the conduit box comes in is the 9 o’clock position. When installing the ALPHA HWR, you can position the conduit box in the 3.., 6.., 9.., or 12 o’clock position.
If you want to change the position of the conduit box:
For a flanged ALPHA HWR, tighten the bolts and close the isolating valves.
The pump liquid may be scalding hot and under high pressure.
Remove the four bolts.
Turn the pump head to the desired position.
Insert and cross-tighten the bolts.

Step 4: connect wires
The ALPHA HWR comes with a toolless lever connector which allows for wiring to be done outside the conduit box.

Let’s see how it works.
Step 1 – Remove the lid from the conduit box and attach a conduit gland and a conduit to the knocked-out hole.
Step 2 - Strip the wires. Insert them into the conduit.
Step 3 – Open the conductor levers and connect the wires to the power connector.
Step 4 – Secure the wires by closing the conductor levers.
Step 5 – Place the power connector into the conduit box.
Step 6 – Fasten the conduit box lid with the two screws and switch the pump on.
Once you have fitted the ALPHA HWR pump, you can download the Grundfos GO app, connect to the pump via Bluetooth, and use the guided setup to complete installation.

That covers our installation guidance for the ALPHA HWR pump.
Thanks for watching.
