A successful partnership for significant energy savings

Five-year project delivering 1.8 MWh annual energy savings so far at government office building in central London

At a prestigious government office in London, Grundfos began replacing 92 outdated pumps with energy-efficient solutions in 2021. To date, 64 pumps have been replaced, saving 745 tonnes of CO₂ and 1.8 MWh of energy annually. A successful partnership between Grundfos’ in-house team of experts and the on-site team, the project is now in its fifth phase.

Background

In 2020, Grundfos began working with a large government office in London to address their need to replace pumps in the building that were reaching the end of their lifecycle.

A historic building in its own right, the facility required a full-service supplier capable of removing outdated belt-driven pump units and replacing them with modern, energy-efficient solutions – all while managing any challenges that arose during the process.

Grundfos’ winning proposal not only delivered a plan for seamless system modernisation but also identified energy optimisation opportunities, such as the potential to eliminate approximately 655 tonnes of CO₂ annually, through the installation of state-of-the-art pump technology.

The solution: a successful partnership

Grundfos embarked on the multi-year project in 2021, planning to replace over 92 pumps in phases over a 4–5 year period. Working closely with the client’s on-site team, Grundfos established a dedicated customer success team to ensure the project’s smooth execution.

Key aspects of the Grundfos end-to-end solution included:

  • Comprehensive project management: the Grundfos team managed site works, permits, scheduling and timely execution.
  • End-to-end service: all preparatory works, system design, installation and commissioning were carried out by Grundfos.
  • High standards: as a prestigious site, this project demanded exceptional quality – exactly what the Grundfos team thrives on and delivers.
  • Clear communication: regular updates, reviews and strong collaboration with the client team on site fostered a partnership based on trust and transparency, with the project due to complete on time and to specification.

Phased implementation and results

To date, Grundfos has successfully replaced 64 of the planned 92 pumps, with all work executed by the in-house UK Complex Project Delivery Team.

Impact so far

The upgraded systems have already delivered significant environmental and operational benefits that have exceeded the initial projections:

CO₂ reduction:

745 tonnes annually

Energy savings:

1.8 MWh per year

By transitioning from outdated belt-driven technology to modern, high-efficiency pumps, the government office has taken meaningful steps towards meeting emission reduction targets and reducing operational costs.

At the same time, Grundfos intelligent solutions ensure a reliable system performance while maintaining outstanding levels of comfort for the building’s occupants.

Improve efficiency and comfort in your building with Grundfos Energy Optimisation

Did you know the cost of purchasing a pump makes up only 5% of the total lifetime cost? The other 95% comes from energy use and maintenance costs.

Assessing your pumps and systems can reveal a hidden potential for both energy savings and improved comfort.

Besides bringing energy savings, energy optimisation will also improve reliability, lower operating costs and extend the lifetime of both pump and system.

Changing a pumping system affects the energy consumption

Based on Grundfos’ extensive history within optimising pump operations globally, the largest energy savings potential for pump operation is found in the control system and system design.

We deliver the optimal combination of pumps, drives and auxiliary components for a specific application, incorporating intelligent control features and functions and building onapplication knowledge and experience. Grundfos application control allows easy integration of pumps, drives, measurement, controls, protections, and communication, saving valuable engineering, installation and commissioning time.

Energy optimisation ensures peace of mind

The optimisation process is all about finding ways to reduce your energy consumption, lower your carbon footprint and ultimately reach your sustainability targets. Let Grundfos free up your resources and ensure total peace of mind.

Replacing older and inefficient pumps can be a smart choice as the cost of a new pump is only a fraction of the lifetime energy costs.
