Become familiar with a variety of installation basics to help your pump perform at the highest level.

Whenever you buy a pump, you’re interested in ensuring the longest possible lifetime and the best possible efficiency. But that doesn’t come on its own.

In this brief module, we’re going to take you through a few additional installation basics to help your pump perform optimally. Let’s get started.

During the installation, make sure to mount the pump to a fixed base.  By doing so, you can prevent the pump from being knocked around in harsh weather conditions. Furthermore, a fixed base can also help to minimise and isolate vibration.

If you leave your pump out in the open air, its lifetime is likely to be reduced.

Simply place a protective cover over the pump to minimise the damage.

In addition, when the temperature drops in the winter, you can add a heating box to your pump…

Likewise, during the summer, you can provide the motor with a source of airflow for cooling.

When working with pipework, you should try to avoid excessive use of elbows and bends and ensure that all fittings are properly tightened.

You should also make sure that all valves are correctly sized to the pump and application you are dealing with.

Before a pump starts, it needs to be filled with water…

While some Grundfos pumps are self-priming, it’s not the case with all pumps, so make sure to prime your pump manually if you have to.

If your pump doesn’t offer built-in dry-running protection, you can add a float switch to protect your pump from dry-running.

In that case, if the water drops below a certain level, the float will stop the pump, thereby protecting against dry-running.
