Why choose a MAGNA1 Model C circulator pump?

Learn about the main benefits of the new MAGNA1, how it stands out from previous circulators, as well as why it is an ideal replacement pump for older circulators.

The Grundfos MAGNA1 Model C offers a variety of benefits that make it stand out from its predecessors.

In this module, we’re going to take a closer look at these benefits and highlight why it makes sense for you, as an installer, to choose the MAGNA1 Model C. Let’s get started.

First of all, the MAGNA1 has a low investment cost. So, if you’re looking to replace one of the many old, inefficient circulator pumps present in commercial buildings, the MAGNA1 is a good choice. The low investment cost combined with the pump’s high efficiency means that the return on investment is short, making it an ideal replacement pump for older circulators.

Next, the end-user will enjoy high energy savings. The MAGNA1 is characterised as best-in-class when it comes to efficiency – reaching an energy-efficiency index equal to or below an unprecedented 0.20 for single pumps, and equal to or below 0.23 for twin pumps.

Imagine an old, inefficient circulator pump with an extremely high energy consumption. By replacing this pump with a MAGNA1, the payback time will be less than two years – once again, demonstrating the pump’s best-in-class efficiency.

For installers like yourself, time is often a virtue. Thankfully, the MAGNA1 is easy to install and commission. Simply place the pump in its intended location between the pipes and tighten the bolts, and the mechanical installation is complete. Once fixed to the pipes, you can loosen the clamp ring to easily reposition the pump head if needed.

Furthermore, a twin pump setup would usually require a substantial effort in terms of wiring. But this doesn’t apply to MAGNA1. Connection between the two pump heads is wireless, which is a real time-saver in terms of connection and installation.

Thanks to its simple user interface, commissioning the pump is easy and can be done by means of a single button. Simply press the button to toggle through the control functions. You can choose between three pre-defined control functions, which each have three levels:

There are the three proportional pressure curves especially suited for radiator systems, three constant pressure curves for underfloor heating systems and three constant curves if you want the pump to run at a fixed speed.

The pump is factory-set to run in the second proportional pressure control function.

The interface also informs you about the status of the pump by means of circular LED indicator – this is called the Grundfos Eye. It lights up in different colours and sequences, all of which signify different statuses.

For instance, when the power is on and the pump is running, the Grundfos Eye lights up green and rotates in the direction of the pump’s rotation. If the pump stops, but the power is still on, two permanent indicators light up.

In case of a warning, the light will turn yellow and if there’s a pump fault, the Grundfos Eye will show a permanent red light.

One of the main features of the MAGNA1 Model C is that it can easily be integrated in simple monitoring and control systems. This is thanks to its digital input to start and stop the pump, as well as its alarm relay output, which, when connected, allows the system to send messages to external monitoring systems. This brings peace of mind for the end-user and reduces the overall system downtime. Let’s take a closer look at how it works.

Imagine a scenario in the basement of a hotel. The heat source is a gas boiler and the MAGNA1 pump’s job is to circulate heated water in a radiator system. Thanks to the alarm relay output in the MAGNA1, the PLC controller can tell the boiler not to start if it receives a fault message from the alarm relay. Likewise, the digital input in MAGNA1 allows the pump to start or stop by means of external input.

In terms of system monitoring, there are three different monitoring levels.

First of all, there’s the Grundfos Eye on the pump interface, which allows you to monitor the pump locally from the pump room.

Secondly, there’s external monitoring. If your pump is connected to an external monitoring system elsewhere in the building, you can receive alarm signals remotely if your building management system offers this functionality.

Finally, you can check the alarm signals in Grundfos GO Remote if the pump is connected to the app. You can also use Grundfos GO to generate reports.

Additionally, Grundfos GO offers easy troubleshooting of the pump. Simply go to the alarms and warnings menu to find an explanation of the fault as well as how to find a solution to it.

That covers the main features of the MAGNA1 Model C.

If you’re looking for more advanced pump features for system optimisation, Grundfos MAGNA3 offers a good alternative.

Let’s recap the benefits that the MAGNA1 Model C brings.

It has a low investment cost – making it an ideal replacement pump for older circulators.

Its best-in-class efficiency will result in significant energy savings for the end-user.

It’s easy to install and the user-friendly interface allows commissioning with just one button.

It can be connected to simple monitoring and control systems, contributing to an improved peace of mind for the installer and the end-user.

Finally, there are three different monitoring levels: Local monitoring on the pump, external monitoring, or by means of Grundfos GO. This lets you monitor the pump however you wish.
