The Grundfos SP - The original Serious Pump

The Grundfos SP submersible is a highly durable pump made of high-grade, corrosion-resistant stainless steel. Resistant to sand and aggressive water, SP also boasts features such as dry-running protection and motor burnout protection, both of which contribute to the impressive durability of the pump.

Thanks to the optimised hydraulics design, the SP delivers optimum efficiency during periods of high demand, ensuring low long-term costs and high operating reliability. The pumps are suitable for a variety of applications, including groundwater supply to waterworks, irrigation, groundwater lowering, pressure boosting, and industrial applications.

20 years on, still going strong

Pirramimma Wines has a proud tradition stretching to 1892. As one of oldest family wineries in South Australia’s famed McLaren Vale region, a large part of Piramimma’s reputation rests on producing the finest grapes in their 130 hectare vineyard.

A critical aspect of the winery's grape production is reliable irrigation, which depends on a Grundfos SP46 submersible pump located at the bottom of a bore 78 meters deep. This pump has proved its reliability over more than 20 vintages and a recent service established that it should continue operating smoothly for many more years.

A legacy built on serious applications

Founded in 1945, Grundfos has always endeavoured to be at the forefront of pump innovation. From the very first pump - Foss 1- nicknamed "the pig", designing pumps for purpose and application has been key.

Whether it be the introduction of the original stainless steel SP in 1967, our first solar powered pump in 1982, the groundbreaking X99 chip or the new world of pump monitoring, Grundfos has a long history of innovating products with the application in mind.

The core of this innovation has always been efficiency in pump operation and water movement, and can be seen throughout the Grundfos range of pumps.

1945 - Poul Due Jensen founds Grundfos out of a local farmers need for a small electric pump. As he couldn’t find an electric pump of satisfactory quality, he decided to develop one himself.

1967 - The introduction of the stainless steel SP submersible pump. The SP submersible pumps were used for pumping unfiltered water for water supply, irrigation, and groundwater lowering. They were a big breakthrough since they were made entirely of stainless steel, which meant that pumps had a much longer lifetime, even in aggressive water. The SP pumps filled a niche with a significant demand, as the piston pumps were long outdated.

1982 - During the 1980s a broad interest in climate change and sustainability started to manifest all over the world. Grundfos started to investigate the possibilities of a solar-driven pump around 1980, and when the United Nations Development Programme launched a solar pump system competition in 1980, the work really took off. Grundfos introduced their solar-driven pump system to the world in 1982 and won the UNDP competition.

1991 - The development of a micro frequency converter began in the mid 1980s. The extensive research and development resulted in the launch of X99 in 1991. X99 was presented in the circulator pump UPE, making it the world’s first intelligent pump. The X99 resulted in enormous energy savings and was subsequently an integral part of many Grundfos pumps going forward.

2002 - The SQFlex is flexible in its power supply and is therefore ideal for remote areas where there is either no power supply, or where the supply is unreliable. The pump can be run by for instance solar or wind energy, or run on a generator or batteries. Like the solar pump systems developed by Grundfos in the 1980s, the SQFlex is virtually maintenance-free.

2025 and beyond - Not surprisingly, at Grundfos, we believe water is the most essential resource on the planet. The challenge now is to move more water while using less energy, increase our resilience to the impacts of climate change, and improve access to water for all.
