Improved Quality of Life In Kashmir Walley With Sustainable Water Solutions

THE SITUATION

The Kashmir valley is known for its picturesque hills, glaciers and green Felds. However, the lives of local inhabitants is fraught with daunting hardship every day. Situated at 5600 sq ft above sea level makes the availability of potable water scarce, forcing locals to toil for hours to meet their daily water needs. The freezing temperatures during winter makes it harder for women as they may have to walk even longer in search of water. Moreover, the erratic electric supply makes it extremely challenging to get water using electric motor pumps. Getting water manually through hand pumps can be physically draining. The task at hand is to create an effcient water supply mechanism without relying on the state's electricity grid.

THE SOLUTION

Being a solution-focused company with a strong social commitment, Grundfos along with its Channel Partner M/s SIAB Surgiments, designed a solar pumping system that can work without depending on the electricity grid. Through this unique and effcient solar system, Grundfos ensured sustainable and consistent water supply in any climatic condition. This system is so comprehensive as it is plug and play, user-friendly, easy to operate, substantially automated requiring least human effort, thereby, eliminating the dependency on on-ground technical expertise. This path-breaking solution from Grundfos has ensured uninterrupted water supply, with least human effort to 50 villages in the valley.

OUTCOME

Reliable water supply for 50,000 residents spread across 50 villages, irrespective of climatic conditions.Residents, particularly women, were able to save several hours of their day, which they use qualitatively with their family and productively in socio-economic activities, leading to improved income levels. A green and sustainable solution independent of local electricity grid. The long-lasting and positive impact of this project on the quality of life will be felt by the future generations in the Kashmir valley, as well. Substantial savings on time, energy cost and human effort for the locals.
