Dry installation

Dry pit pumps in dry installations are not submerged in the pumped liquid but installed next to the sump. The pumps can be installed horizontally or vertically. The common advantages of a horizontal installation are:

  • Simplified piping with fewer bends
  • An even suction flow to the impeller
  • A lower pump position

The motor on a dry-installed pump requires a form of cooling. This could be a cooling jacket that allows an external liquid or the pumped liquid to flow around the motor house.

The trend is toward dry-installed pumps rather than submerged pump installations. This is mainly due to the working environment for servicing the pumps.

On Grundfos SE1/SEV pumps, the motor house is made of solid aluminium and therefore does not require special cooling in a dry installation.
