Welcome to the Industrial wastewater treatment course. In this module, we’re going to explore the importance of wastewater quality, the main challenges related to wastewater treatment, and its reuse in industrial processes. Let’s get started.

Whether it’s food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, or mining, every single industry has its own unique water needs and produces different types of wastewater. Because of this, the way the water is treated and reused must be tailored to each case, and every industrial site needs its own strategy.

Understanding the quality of wastewater produced and the quality requirements at each point of use is essential for defining the appropriate treatment steps and operational conditions. Let’s take a closer look.

There are key differences between municipal and industrial wastewater treatment systems. In municipalities, wastewater typically flows through a closed system connected to the public treatment network, which is designed to handle domestic effluent. But in industrial settings, treatment requirements vary depending on the sector, the type of effluent produced, local regulations, and other factors. In many cases, wastewater must be treated before it can even be discharged into a municipal sewage system.

Let’s take a look at an example: Wastewater from the food industry is rich in organic compounds and must be treated differently from wastewater produced in the semiconductor industry, which contains high levels of inorganic substances. The required treatment process depends on the specific characteristics of the wastewater and the desired quality of the final effluent.

In industrial parks, multiple companies discharge different types of wastewater from different processes.

Take the textile industry, for instance. Depending on the stage of production, wastewater can carry either an organic or inorganic load. These various wastewater streams eventually combine into one complex water matrix. That’s why it’s essential to understand the composition of the wastewater and how to treat it effectively.

Because every industry is different, understanding the customer’s needs and market is crucial. Everything depends on how the customer uses the water, how it should be treated, and what quality is required throughout the process.

Let’s look at a real-world example. The brewing industry has a global presence and uses significant amounts of water. To better understand the variations in water quality throughout the brewing process, and what breweries expect from treated water, Grundfos visited breweries on site.

These visits revealed some specific challenges that need to be addressed. For example, there is a risk of biological regrowth when reusing water, particularly when it has a high organic content. This can be especially problematic in cooling water systems. That’s why customers need tailored solutions for biocide dosing, chemical monitoring, and performance tracking.

Different industries have different needs, and different applications require different treatment approaches. There’s no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to water reuse. That’s why Grundfos works to understand each customer’s situation to help them overcome their specific challenges.

In cooling tower systems, for instance, targeted solutions are needed to prevent biological regrowth and maintain efficiency through proper biocide dosing and continuous monitoring.
