Since 2015, over 2,300 telemetry units and level sensors have been supplied, installed and maintained for Yorkshire Water’s Combined Sewer Overflow network – delivering actionable data that pinpoints incidents faster and supports quicker corrective action.

Yorkshire Water

A water supply and treatment utility company, Yorkshire Water provides essential water and wastewater services to the people and businesses of the Yorkshire and Humberside region.

The situation

Yorkshire Water provides water and wastewater services throughout Yorkshire and parts of Lincolnshire and Derbyshire in the UK. It serves 2.3 million households and 130,000 business customers, providing 1.24 billion litres of drinking water every single day to its customers.

Yorkshire Water recognised the importance of dependable monitoring and efficient, proactive management of its Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs) for a safer and more reliable sewer network. Early detection of potential incidents is of key importance, to reduce the environmental impact of uncontrolled discharge.

The solution

Since 2015, 2,300 Grundfos Telemetry Ex units and level sensors have been supplied, installed and maintained as a CSO monitoring solution, generating data and events that have enabled the temporal and geospatial identification of incidents and quicker corrective actions.

The solution monitors various overflow points in the sewer network. Equipment at each monitoring point includes either an intelligent Ultrasonic loop-powered transducer or pressure transducer, and a battery-powered Grundfos Telemetry Ex unit, providing the capability to collect level information at sewer overflow locations.

The measured level values are sampled and stored with timestamps at 15-minute intervals. Additionally, the telemetry unit is configured to trend diagnostic information from internal points such as temperature, battery voltage and signal strength.

Grundfos Telemetry Ex is an intrinsically safe ATEX/IECEx certified (to Zone 0, Gas Group IIB) self-contained datalogger / remote telemetry unit, with:

  • Internal or external battery pack
  • IP68-rated enclosure
  • Either an IoT (NB-IoT/Cat-M1) or 4G (with 3G/2G fallback) modem
  • Auto-switching internal and external antenna options
  • Software configurable AI, CI, DI, Modbus and SDI-12 communication options (including Multidrop)
  • Integrated submersion sensor
  • Local diagnostic points
  • Intelligent alarm reporting
It communicates with the Grundfos Connect Sensor Platform, DNP3/WITS DNP3 Masters, or FTP/S servers.

Key benefits

Faster, more effective corrective action:

Due to early incident detection.

Reduced environmental damage and costs:

With fast and effective response to uncontrolled spillages.

Improved asset and process control:

Including on- and offline data access for analysis and modelling.

Grundfos supplied:

  • Grundfos Telemetry Ex units
  • Level sensors, installation and maintenance services

Facts:

  • Topic: Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) monitoring
  • Location: Yorkshire, United Kingdom
  • Customer: Yorkshire Water

The outcome

Proactive management of CSOs has proved highly beneficial to Yorkshire Water: the data and events generated by the monitoring system has allowed early detection of incidents and their location, resulting in earlier, more effective, corrective action when necessary.

Fast and effective response to uncontrolled spillages has reduced the risk of environmental damage and associated financial costs. The data collected and information provided has allowed for improved predictive operation, maintenance and management. The control of assets and processes has been improved, with access to data for both online and offline analysis and modelling.
