Every day, millions of Americans wait between 30 seconds to 2 minutes and even longer for hot water to reach their faucets or showers. During that time, clean, potable water goes straight down the drain. For the average home, this adds up to 3,650 to 13,505 gallons of water wasted per year – just waiting for hot water.
When scaled across the U.S., this translates to a staggering 430 billion to 1.59 trillion gallons of water wasted annually, even when accounting for the 10% of homes that already have instant hot water systems.
To put these staggering numbers into context, an Olympic-sized swimming pool contains an estimated 660,000 gallons of water, meaning that somewhere between 0.65 million and 2.4 million Olympic-sized swimming pools go down the drain every year, simply waiting for hot water.
The opportunity: Saving households water and money
By eliminating the wait for hot water, American households could dramatically reduce their water waste and lower their utility bills. Based on average national water rates (~$0.004/gallon), households could save between $15 and $54 per year. Nationwide, the total economic savings on water bills would be between $1.72 billion and $6.37 billion annually.
This isn’t just a theoretical estimate. In December 2024, I installed a Grundfos ALPHA COMFORT SYSTEM, significantly reducing the time it takes for hot water to reach faucets and showers. In just the first two full months, I saved 1,223 gallons of water compared to the same period last year – translating to a $5.08 reduction on my water bill. Projected across the whole year, that’s approximately 7,338 gallons of water saved and $30.48 off my water bill over 6 billing cycles.

Today’s smart recirculation systems use ECM (electronically commutated motor) technology, intelligent sensors, and programmable timers to deliver hot water efficiently while minimizing energy use. In short, we no longer have to choose between saving water and saving energy – we can do both and do it smarter. And hot water recirculation isn’t the only solution.

Low-flow fixtures like aerated faucets and high-efficiency showerheads reduce usage without compromising performance. Smart irrigation controllers adjust watering based on weather and soil conditions. And fixing common household leaks – often silent and unnoticed – can prevent thousands of gallons of wasted water each year.
In addition to water bill savings, households can expect to save on sewer/waste water charges. Most municipal sewer bills are based on water consumption, meaning that any reduction in water use translates directly into reduced sewer fees. At an average sewer rate of approximately $6.50 per 1,000 gallons, households could save an additional $24 to $88 per year. Nationally, this equates to between $2.8 billion and $10.3 billion in sewer bill savings annually.

These figures demonstrate the full economic impact of ending the wait for hot water. The savings go directly into homeowners’ pockets, strengthening household finances while supporting national water and energy conservation goals.

Eliminating the wait for hot water does more than save time, water, and money. It reduces hidden energy demand and emissions at a national scale. Every gallon of clean water delivered to a home takes energy to produce, especially when sourced from groundwater or surface water systems. When we waste hot water, we’re not just wasting a resource – we’re throwing away the electricity used to create it.
In fact, the electricity used to produce the water we waste while waiting for it to warm up ranges between approximately 745.6 million and 2.76 billion kilowatt-hours each year. That’s enough energy to power between 70,000 and 260,000 U.S. homes annually.
This is not just about personal savings – it’s about reallocating meaningful national energy capacity toward more productive use. Reducing this demand could ease pressure on aging grid infrastructure, cut utility costs, and accelerate progress toward decarbonization.

For example, semiconductor plants require billions of gallons of ultra-pure water each year, and data centers rely on millions of gallons daily for cooling. This reallocation could power hundreds of new facilities without straining local supplies.
New technologies such as vertical farming, clean hydrogen production, and biomanufacturing are also water-intensive. With the right allocation, we can future-proof the economy, fuel innovation, and attract investment in next-generation industries that define the digital and low-carbon era.
