When the team behind one of the UK’s largest stadiums discovered that outdated pumps were wasting energy and resources behind the scenes, they turned to Grundfos for help.
That move marked the first step towards substantial savings and laid the foundation for a smarter, more efficient stadium fit for the legends it hosts.
Built for greatness on and off the pitch
Famous for hosting some of the world’s biggest sports and entertainment events, the stadium is a symbol of world-class performance. Behind the scenes, however, its aging pump systems were becoming increasingly inefficient and unreliable, leading to high energy costs and significant time spent on maintenance. The stadium’s facilities team soon realised it was time for an upgrade that could meet the demands of a modern stadium.
Having previously experienced Grundfos' solutions, the team already trusted Grundfos’ reputation for reliability and high performance, laying the foundation for a strong partnership.
Grundfos Energy Check reveals the path
Representatives from Grundfos visited the site to discuss the replacement project with stadium personnel. Here, they agreed that the natural first step was to conduct an Energy Check to get the full overview of the potential savings.
Based on these insights, Lewis Creed and his team, led internally by Neil Wilson, Complex Energy Optimisation Proposals and Project Engineer, developed an upgrade plan tailored to meet the demands of the modern stadium. In the first phase of the project, the main focus was on replacing three large, fixed-speed pumps with high-efficiency Grundfos TP solutions. Wall-mounted CUE drives were also installed to adjust system performance to the actual demand, laying the groundwork for a smarter and much more efficient operation.

The Energy Check revealed what we already knew – that many of the existing pumps were not operating efficiently. On top of that, it outlined the potential energy savings, CO₂ reductions and the expected payback period, which was only slightly more than a year. All signs were there to get started immediately, so that’s what we did.
Big impact, short payback
Within the first year of operation, these upgrades have already yielded impressive results, with annual energy savings of 422,235 kWh and a CO₂ reduction of 103.45 tonnes. This means that the payback period was around one year.
By taking the time to understand the stadium’s challenges and needs, the Grundfos team was able to deliver the right solutions quickly, making the entire upgrade process efficient and hassle-free.
The success and teamwork during this initial phase soon led to more, and Grundfos has since been invited to replace all the remaining pumps at the stadium, helping to ensure that what happens behind the scenes is as impressive as the world-class action on the pitch.
