Process water for supplier of paper and solid cardboard

Ranheim Paper & Board AS is the Nordic’s leading supplier of paper and solid carboard and has a long history as an innovative papermill.

The new water treatment plant is replacing an old demineraliser from the 80s. During the replacement process, a uninterrupted water supply was provided by a Grundfos containerised water treatment system through a rental agreement. On top it gave the opportunity to modernize the facilities before installation of the new water treatment plant.

The system design has been proven to offer a reliable supply of high-quality water less than 1.5 μS/cm, while ensuring minimal need for maintenance and low operating costs. Regular service with preventive maintenance including CIP of the RO units is done by Grundfos in Norway.

Make-up water for cooling tower

Make-up water for cooling tower

The water treatment solution provides 19 m³/h of make-up water for a cooling tower system at the company Messer Industriegase in the city of Speyer, Germany. Messer Industriegase is the largest privately held industrial gas business in the world.

Maintaining good water quality is essential to prevent scaling, corrosion, and biological fouling within the cooling tower. Utilizing demineralised water for cooling also reduce the frequency of blowdown significantly which lower the consumption of both water and energy. In this case, the required water quality is achieved by blending two water streams: partly filtered water and partly demineralised water.

The Messer Industriegase facility has its own private water supply from groundwater. First treatment step is iron removal in a Grundfos pressure filter. In case of insufficient supply from own source, the facility gets pretreated drinking water quality from the local waterworks.

The drinking water is stored in a 14 m³ clean water tank. Hereafter the water is demineralised in a Grundfos reverse osmosis unit with a capacity of 15 m³/h.

DI rinse water for production of high-end audio products

The customer is developing and manufacturing high-end audio products. To support a growing demand of modern aluminum cabinets, the customer has implemented a new anodizing surface treatment line. For this purpose, demineralised rinse water of high purity is needed. The result is an exclusive surface look and top product quality.

Grundfos has supplied and installed a new water treatment solution for the production of demineralised water. Due to lack of space, a compact RO unit with a small footprint was selected. After the RO unit the water is further polished in a mixed-bed unit in order to reach the high water quality. The mixed-bed unit is for off-site regeneration, supporting the space issue as well as a concern for a complete chemical free solution.

Rynkeby Foods A/S is the largest manufacturer of juice and cordials in the Nordic region.

In connection with an expansion of the production, there was also a need for a larger amount of process water. Grundfos has supplied the water treatment solution for producing the water qualities of softened water and demineralised water for the following purposes:

  • rinse water for juice bottles
  • lubricant for food grade pumps
