Drinking water

Grundfos plants can produce drinking water from almost all-natural resources, such as groundwater and surface water. Untreated groundwater and surface water contain salts, organic components, particles and gases that can cause a wide variety of problems.

Drinking water treatment

To start the necessary precipitation processes, the water needs to be oxidized and aerated with atmospheric air. An integrated oxidation and spraying system ensure optimum oxidation at the right time in the filtration process. The water is further treated in the pressure filter leading to pure drinking water quality without use of chemicals in the process.

World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines are generally followed throughout the world for drinking water quality requirements. In addition to the WHO guidelines, each country or territory can have their own standards.

Reducing contaminants in drinking water

Both groundwater and surface water contain several natural salts and organic substances, particles, and gasses. They can be the reason for colour, bad taste, bacteria in the water and corrosion in pipes and installations among other things. Grundfos has extensive experience with removal of a wide range of impurities. 

Aggressive carbon dioxide

Aggressive carbon dioxide can be neutralized in a pressure filter plant by means of a calcium-based filter material called Magno-Dol.

Ammonium

Ammonium can be reduced by a biological process, in which ammonium is transformed into nitrate via nitrite.

Arsenic

Arsenic binds to iron and can be removed by iron-based filtration. Where natural iron is insufficient, iron salts or iron oxide filter media are added.

Bacteria

UV disinfection disables micro-organisms by breaking down their DNA. It effectively removes bacteria, viruses, algae, and fungi in most water types.

Hardness

Nanofiltration provides partial softening without chemicals. Full hardness removal is achieved with ion exchange softening.

Hydrogen sulphide and methane

Hydrogen sulphide and methane are removed by oxidation through aeration, adding oxygen to the raw water.

Iron and manganese

After oxidation, iron and manganese are removed by sand filtration. Special filter media ensure effective manganese removal, even at low pH levels.

Pesticides, PFAS

Pesticides and PFAS are effectively removed using activated carbon or ion exchange with PFAS‑selective resins.

Sulphate, chloride, and fluoride

Nanofiltration reduces sulphate, chloride, and fluoride by selectively removing divalent ions using low‑pressure membrane technology with low energy consumption.

PFOS reduction in effluent water from landfill site

Rambo AB, a municipal waste management company in Sweden, faced significant challenges with PFOS contamination in effluent water from landfill site. Grundfos has designed and commisioned an effective solution for treating 10 m³/h of the effluent water containing PFOS.

The water treatment process includes several stages: chemical flocculation to reduce turbidity and aggregate suspended solids, settling for removing particles, sand filtration to further clarify the water, and ion exchange to effectively reduce PFOS and other PFAS pollutants.

The pretreatment stages (chemical flocculation, settling, and sand filtration) ensure that organics and suspended solids are removed, allowing the ion exchange to work efficiently. Although the ion exchange capacity will eventually exhaust, the robust pretreatment prevents clogging and fouling, thereby increasing the lifespan of the ion exchange resins.

A custom-built PLC monitor system watches sensors, pumps, and flow, alerting service technicians if needed, resulting in a reliable operation.

Natural mineral water in recyclable PET bottles

Danish Bottling Company produces and distributes water and soft drinks to leading retail chains, as well as soft drinks and energy drinks to a larger dealer network in Denmark. Danish Bottling Company also exports Nornir® natural mineral water to China.                                                                  

In 2007, the Danish Bottling Company moved production to Brande and gained access to its own spring of natural mineral water - The spring is today known as Nornir®. The water from this spring is classified as soft water with a low content of Sodium and Chloride. Having its own drilling, relieved a need for filtration of raw water for the removal of iron and manganese. At that time Grundfos delivered 2 x automatic TFB 14 pressure filters. Demand for natural mineral water in recyclable PET bottles has subsequently increased and thus, the need for water treatment has also increased. This has led to the delivery of another production line consisting of 2 x automatic TFB 14 pressure filters for production in Brande.

The solution today consists of 4 x TFB 14 pressure filters with an output of 2 x 14 m³/h set up as pre- and post-filter. The pipe system is made of stainless steel and equipped with individual valves. Both filter lines are also connected to a new control panel.

Iron removal plant for beer production

Many productions face problems caused by iron precipitations in pipes, tanks, boilers and other equipment. Usually it happens when water source is underground well and iron is not removed. As a result, many efforts are made to remove and clean all surfaces where iron settles.

Apart from the technical problems, when it comes to food and beverage where water is used as a part of a final product, it is very important not to have iron in the product water due to issues which can interfere technological processes and the final product quality.

One of the oldest breweries in Ukraine “Berdichev Brewery” improved their production by installing a new iron removal plant from Grundfos Water Treatment based on environmentally friendly non-chemical solution.

Here iron is removed from water just by aeration with air and filtration by natural materials inside TFB pressure filters.

The customer is AGRANA Starch GmbH, specialized in processing and adding value to high quality agricultural commodities such as corn, potatoes and wheat. The Starch segment includes a range of production facilities hereunder a wheat starch mill in Pischelsdorf.

The water treatment solution consists of pressure filters for removal of iron and manganese from own groundwater supply. After filtration, the water is used as drinking water and inlet water for existing, larger softening plant, also supplied by Grundfos. The water is used in the refinement of starch products for food applications, mainly food ingredients but also for animal food.

Grundfos has delivered pressure filters in stainless steel for the Danish waterworks Hasselager-Kolt.

The groundwater is oxidized with oxygen from a compressor. It is then filtered through pressure filters to remove iron and manganese.

The pressure filter plants are designed with a nozzle plate with special nozzles in the lower part, which offers some significant advantages such as:

  • Even distribution of load for optimum utilization of the filter medium
  • Good filtration quality
  • Efficient and even washing of the filtering media ensuring high filtration capacity
  • Long service intervals between each backwash
  • Long life-time of the filter media

Pesticide removal with activated carbon filter system

A Danish utility company has installed activated carbon filter systems from Grundfos to comply with the Danish authorities' limit values for pesticide residues (alachlor ESA) and organic solvents in drinking water.

The water is treated by passing a partial flow from open sand filters through two activated carbon filters, while the remaining partial flow is led directly to the clean water tank. The partial flow from the carbon filters is further treated in a UV system before being oxygenated with compressed air and mixed with the untreated partial flow in the clean water tank. The choice of carbon type was based on pilot tests carried out with Grundfos' test system at the waterworks.

The utility company is building a new, large waterworks, so the carbon filter system is installed outside the old waterworks building. The carbon filter system is designed to be moved to the new location when the new waterworks is commissioned.
