Water quality according to your needs

A distinction is made between four different water qualities. The water quality can be determined based on a number of characteristics. Explore more about different water qualities and relevant technologies treating water to your desired quality.

Drinking water

Grundfos plants can produce drinking water from almost all-natural resources, such as groundwater and surface water. Untreated groundwater and surface water contain salts, organic components, particles and gases that can cause a wide variety of problems.

Drinking water treatment

To start the necessary precipitation processes, the water needs to be oxidized and aerated with atmospheric air. An integrated oxidation and spraying system ensure optimum oxidation at the right time in the filtration process. The water is further treated in the pressure filter leading to pure drinking water quality without use of chemicals in the process.

World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines are generally followed throughout the world for drinking water quality requirements. In addition to the WHO guidelines, each country or territory can have their own standards.

Removed elements
  • Iron (Fe++)
  • Manganese (Mn++)
  • Ammonium (NH4+)

Drinking water

Softened water

Hard water contains calcium and magnesium that can cause scale formation in pipes, heat exchangers, boilers and membranes. In industrial processes, this leads to reduced efficiency, higher energy consumption, increased maintenance and unplanned downtime. Water softening removes hardness at an early stage, protecting equipment and ensuring stable, predictable operation across the entire water treatment system.

Where is water softening used?

Water softening is used both as pretreatment to advanced technologies and as a stand‑alone solution for drinking water and process water applications. In industries such as food & beverage and pharmaceuticals, softened water with drinking water quality is used directly in production to ensure consistent quality and reliable operation.

Demineralised water

Demineralised water plays a critical role in industrial processes where even small amounts of dissolved salts can impact product quality, system performance and operational reliability.

Untreated water contains dissolved minerals, gases and organic substances that can lead to scaling, corrosion and contamination. For industrial manufacturers, this can result in reduced efficiency, increased maintenance costs and inconsistent production.

By removing dissolved solids and impurities, demineralised water ensures reliable process conditions, protects critical equipment, and supports consistent product quality. With the right solution, you can improve operational performance and maintain full control of your water quality.

  • Potassium (K+)
  • Sodium (Na+)
  • Chloride (CI-)
  • Nitrate (NO3-)
  • Sulphate (SO4--)
  • Silicic acid (SIO4-)
  • Alkalinity (HCO3-)

Demineralised water

Ultrapure water

Ultrapure water represents the highest level of water quality, where nearly all dissolved salts, minerals, gases and organic substances are removed.

This results in extremely low conductivity —typically in the range of 0.06–0.2 µS/cm—achieved through advanced polishing technologies such as electrodeionization (EDI) or mixed-bed systems. The production of ultrapure water is a complex, multi-step process combining filtration, softening, demineralization and final polishing to achieve the required purity.

In critical applications, even trace impurities can affect performance, product quality and system reliability. By ensuring consistent and controlled water quality, ultrapure water supports precision, protects sensitive equipment and enables reliable performance in the most demanding environments.
